From Darkness to Light: Niger State's Journey to Renewable Energy Independence

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have praised the Government of Niger State, led by Farmer Governor Umaru Bago, for its unwavering commitment to renewable energy and sustainable growth. The government, through the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, headed by Honourable Commissioner Suleiman Umar, is working tirelessly to ensure that Niger State becomes a hub for renewable energy, attracting investors and sponsors to key into its vision.

At the REA State-By-State Roundtable Engagement with Niger State, held in Abuja, stakeholders and private investors witnessed the collaboration between the Federal Government and Niger State on major power and renewable energy projects. The event highlighted the integration of solar solutions into rural communities for agricultural settlements, education, and healthcare, driving economic growth and sustainable development across Niger State.

Governor Bago emphasized Niger State's readiness to accommodate investors, offering 100,000 hectares of land for housing and agriculture, with an additional hectares from each of the 25 local government areas for renewable energy development. The Sustainable Integrated Productive Communities (SIPC) project, a flagship initiative, aims to create farm estates incorporating solar power, housing, and agricultural infrastructure.

REA Managing Director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, commended Governor Bago's commitment to the project, noting that REA has up to 30 projects being developed in Niger State. The IsDB has also signed an agreement with the Niger State Government for a $163 million solar electrification project, expected to provide alternative power sources to communities and stabilize the national grid.

Honourable Commissioner Suleiman Umar expressed gratitude to stakeholders, investors, and the REA team for their support, reaffirming Niger State's dedication to realizing the New Niger Agenda's vision. The government is poised to harness its renewable energy potential, drive sustainable growth, and improve the quality of life for Niger State communities.

The partnership between REA, IsDB, and the Niger State Government demonstrates a shared commitment to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development in Nigeria. As Niger State continues to lead by example, it is expected to become a model for other states to follow, showcasing the potential of renewable energy to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods.
