Niger State's Power Future Hangs on Effective Regulation, Says Commissioner Suleiman
Honourable Commissioner Suleiman Umar's passion for transforming Niger State's energy sector was evident as he addressed the gathering of Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) management and staff. The occasion was the opening of a three-day training programme on the fundamentals of electricity regulation and tariff methodology, a crucial step towards realizing Farmer Governor Umaru Bago's vision of reliable power for all.
Commissioner Umar emphasized the importance of effective regulation in creating a functional electricity market, highlighting the need for a cost-reflective, transparent, and fair tariff. "A tariff that is too low discourages investment and leads to poor service, while a tariff that is too high burdens consumers and stifles economic activity," he explained. "Your task as regulators is to find the balance."
As he looked out at the attendees, Commissioner Umar urged them to take the training seriously, asking questions, and engaging with the facilitators. "The decisions you make will shape whether businesses choose to invest here, whether households can afford reliable power, and whether our rural communities finally gain access to electricity," he stressed.
The Commissioner's message was clear: the people of Niger State are counting on them to deliver reliable, affordable electricity. He expressed confidence in the NSERC team, led by Chairman Engr Mohammed Sharu, and assured that the training would equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve their mandate.
As the training programme got underway, Commissioner Umar reflected on the progress made since the establishment of NSERC. The Governor's commitment to creating a conducive investment environment, protecting consumers, and ensuring reliable power was evident. Now, it was up to the Commission to deliver on that promise.
With the support of resource persons from Rockstar Energy Limited, the NSERC team was set to dive into the intricacies of electricity regulation, tariff methodology, and the legal and institutional framework governing the sector. Commissioner Umar was optimistic that the training would be a game-changer for Niger State, paving the way for sustainable energy development and economic growth.
