Electricity Bill 2026: A Step Towards Transforming Niger State's Power Sector

 

The Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission, under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, is supervised and monitored by Honourable Suleiman Umar, under the leadership of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago, New Niger Agenda, and is making progress day by day to achieve its goals and objectives of lighting up the Power State for the benefits of all state residents, driving development and growth across the state. This is why the Electricity Commission is validating its approach to achieving the 2026 Electricity Bill.

The Niger State Government organized a Stakeholder Validation Session to review the Niger State Electricity Bill 2026 at the NSDC Suite in Minna, Niger State. The event was facilitated by the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC).

In his welcome address, Chairman of NSERC, Engr. (Dr.) Mohammed Sharu, emphasized the significance of the bill, stating that it would provide a framework for a competitive, transparent, and responsive electricity market in Niger State. He highlighted the need for stakeholder input to ensure the bill reflects global best practices and addresses the state's specific needs.

Dr. Makun Sidi, representing the Secretary to the State Government, delivered a goodwill message, stressing the importance of stakeholder validation in ensuring the bill benefits the people of Niger State. He emphasized the need for sustainable growth and development, aligning with the visionary leadership of Governor Umaru Bago's "New Niger Agenda".

The Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) was represented by Dr. Alexander Akolo, who highlighted NESP's commitment to supporting Niger State's energy sector. The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly was represented by Honourable Nura Muhammad Garba, Chairman of the Committee on Power, who assured the house's support for the bill.

Honourable Nasiru Mu'azu, Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, emphasized the importance of careful review and consideration of the bill before its passage. The Representative of Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Honourable Suleiman Umar, was represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Muhammad Gana, who stressed the need for affordable electricity for Niger State residents.

Honourable Haruna Dokodza, representing the Niger State House of Assembly Committee on Power, highlighted the importance of power for economic development and urged the commission to review the bill carefully.

The event featured presentations on the key provisions of the draft bill, followed by discussions and feedback from participants. Areas of alignment and stakeholder feedback were also discussed, and agreements on next steps were reached.

The Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) is committed to ensuring that the bill is passed and implemented, with support from development partners, including the European Union, German Cooperation, GIZ, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
