Beyond the National Grid: Niger State's Solar Future Unfolds
Niger State is basking in the glory of being at the forefront of the Rural Electrification Agency's (REA) solar mini-grid projects, with a recent disbursement of N9 billion to support the deployment of solar mini-grid projects across Taraba, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger States. Notably, Niger State has received N1.056 billion for mini-grid deployments across three sites, a testament to the state's pioneering efforts in renewable energy.
According to the REA, the funding is backed by its Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up Programme's performance-based grant framework, supported by a recently signed N100 billion Memorandum of Understanding with Banks. This development is a significant milestone in the agency's efforts to improve electricity access in underserved communities.
The Managing Director of REA, Abba Aliyu, expressed his confidence in Nigeria's renewable energy space, stating that the steady flow of funding reflects growing confidence in the sector. "What is particularly encouraging here is the consistency; this is not a one-off thing; it is a pattern of capital being deployed, projects moving forward, and confidence in the system continuing to grow," he said.
Niger State's proactive approach to renewable energy has earned it a spot in the vanguard of states driving this initiative. The state's collaboration with REA and other stakeholders has yielded tangible results, with the N1.056 billion disbursement a case in point.
This development is part of a broader effort by the Federal Government to diversify Nigeria's power supply away from the national grid. The government has approved a N3.3 trillion payment plan to settle longstanding debts in Nigeria's power sector, with about 15 power plants already signing settlement agreements valued at N2.3 trillion.
As Niger State continues to shine bright, it sets an example for other states to follow. With the REA's plan to deploy N100 billion in 2026 for hybrid mini-grid projects targeting government institutions, Niger State is poised to remain a leader in the renewable energy space.
