Niger State Paves the Way for Sustainable Energy in Tertiary Institutions and Healthcare Centers
In a significant stride towards achieving sustainable energy development, Niger State has emerged as the first state to launch the ECOWAS collaboration with the World Bank and REA, targeting Tertiary Institutions and Primary Healthcare Centers. This pioneering initiative is set to transform the energy landscape of the state, providing reliable and clean energy to these critical institutions.
Under the leadership of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago and his Honorable Commissioner of Power and Renewable Energy, Niger State is poised to reap the benefits of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP). This project, funded by the World Bank, with co-financing from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and Directorate General of International Cooperation (DGIS) of the Government of the Netherlands, aims to increase electricity access to households, businesses, and public institutions using modern stand-alone solar technology.
The implementation of ROGEAP in Niger State is expected to have a profound impact on the health and education sectors. With reliable electricity, Primary Healthcare Centers will be able to operate essential medical equipment, reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by 30% and improving emergency care in underserved communities. Additionally, electrified schools will improve learning conditions, extending study hours and enabling digital education, benefiting over 2 million students.
The project timeline is ambitious, with completion expected by December this year, and handover shortly thereafter. The roadmap includes finalizing bidding documents by mid-April 2026, procurement process from May to June 2026, signing contracts with selected developers by end of June/July 2026, and delivery, installation, and commissioning of the work.
Governor Umaru Bago's leadership and the Honorable Commissioner's vision for sustainable energy development have positioned Niger State as a model for other states to follow. As the state embarks on this journey, it is clear that the benefits will be far-reaching, touching the lives of millions of people and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
