Farmer Governor Bago's Vision Takes Shape: Niger State Partners with IsDB for Renewable Energy

As Niger State Government signed an agreement with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for the implementation of the Niger State Solar Electrification Project, a pioneering initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project, valued at $163 million, aims to cover 200 hectares of land and provide alternative power sources to communities in Niger State.

Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, who received the IsDB preparation mission team led by Daniyar Abylkhan, emphasized the state's commitment to sustainable growth, development programs and industrialization. The meeting held at Government House, was attended by key state officials, including the Commissioner of Power and Renewable Energy, Honourable Suleiman Umar, who has been driving to see the success of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago New Niger Agenda on power and renewable energy.

Also present were other Commissioners, Abubakar Mustapha - Chairman of the New Niger Agenda and others are Permanent Secretaries, especially Engr. Abubakar Sadiq Balarebe, Permanent Secretary of Power and Renewable Energy who's been so supportive to his Commissioner making sure everything is in order. In addition, Farmer Governor Umaru Bago also said the 200 hectares of land can be increased to 500 hectares in case of future expansion. The Governor also noted that the solar electrification project will complement these efforts, enhancing food production and productivity.

He acknowledged the IsDB's contributions to the state's development and expressed confidence that the project will address multi-sectorial issues and increase revenue generation. On the part of IsDB, they proposed to build 100 megawatts of solar power in Niger State, leveraging the state's abundant sunlight. The project is expected to stabilize the national grid and contribute to the state's 2,000 megawatts power generation capacity.

The Task Team Lead, Daniyar Abylkhan, commended the Governor's initiative and reaffirmed the IsDB's commitment to partnering with Niger State. Chairman of the New Niger Agenda, highlighted the state's efforts to facilitate the project's success and ensure its timely implementation. The IsDB has previously collaborated with the state on the reconstruction of the Minna/Bida road and is eager to explore further opportunities.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Usman Abubakar, explained that the meeting marks the beginning of the IsDB's preparation process for the project. The state government has assembled stakeholders to develop a comprehensive document for appraisal and approval. Engr. Abubakar Sadiq Balarebe, Permanent Secretary of Power and Renewable Energy, was part of the state team that showcased the state's potential to the IsDB team.

And on the technical aspects of the project, Consultant Umar Faruk Batagarawa highlighted Niger State's potential for solar power generation and the project's role in stabilizing the national grid. Another consultant, Mohammed Mahdi Abubakar, emphasized the importance of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and community engagement for the project's success.

The Niger State Government is poised to harness its renewable energy potential through this partnership with the IsDB. The project is expected to drive sustainable growth, increase productivity, and improve the quality of life for communities in Niger State. Farmer Governor Umaru Bago expressed his appreciation to the IsDB team and stakeholders for their commitment to the project's success, reaffirming the state's dedication to realizing the New Niger Agenda's vision.
