Come to Niger State, Honourable Suleiman Umar tells investors eyeing state power markets

Honourable Suleiman Umar invites power investors to Niger State as states overtake national grid deals

Honourable Suleiman Umar, Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy of Niger State, is calling on investors to bring their power projects to Niger State. The New Niger Agenda of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago is ready to accommodate them. Power State is poised to reap significant benefits from renewable energy projects efficiently and effectively for the people of Niger State.

His call comes as investors across Nigeria are shifting away from the national grid and betting on state-led electricity deals. A new PwC report says these deals are easier to finance because they link power plants directly to the people who use the light — hospitals, factories, and water works. The rules are clearer, the cash flow is more visible, and the risk is lower.

“Investors are assessing projects on a case-by-case basis, with bankability driven by regulatory clarity, tariff credibility and cash-flow visibility,” the PwC report said. Peter Olowononi of Afreximbank added: “Access to capital is not the main constraint. The primary challenge lies in structuring projects with clear risk allocation and predictable revenue.”

That is why Honourable Suleiman Umar says Niger State is ready.

“Niger is the home of power,” he said. The state hosts all four of Nigeria’s hydropower dams — Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro, and Zungeru. It is also the largest state by landmass in Nigeria, with full potential in agriculture and other natural resources.

“Niger State is a state of peace and for green energy for sustainable energy development and growth,” the Commissioner said.

With the Electricity Act 2023, states can now run their own power markets. That means investors can build solar farms, mini-grids, or factories in Niger State and sell power directly to local users. No more waiting on the national grid.

For investors tired of collection problems and grid failures, Niger State offers dams, land, peace, and sweetable business opportunities.

The door is open, and Honourable Suleiman Umar is asking them to come.
