Niger is Globally Recognised on Renewable Energy, Investors/Community Engagement Must Act Now - Hon. Suleiman Umar

Hon. Suleiman Umar, Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Niger State, says Nigerlites must prepare now to take full advantage of the opportunities opening under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Farmer Governor Umaru Bago’s New Niger Agenda.

“Niger State is no longer watching from the sidelines,” Hon. Suleiman Umar stated. “Under the New Niger Agenda, we have aligned with Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda to deliver energy security, jobs, and climate resilience. Today, international institutions across the world have recognised Niger State in renewable energy. Our solar roadmap is being studied because Niger State now leads and is recognised in global growth in energy markets.”

He cited the US$150 million approval by the Islamic Development Bank, IsDB. for the Niger State Solar Energy Development Project as proof of global confidence. With investors and stakeholders already showing interest, he said the next phase must involve youths and communities at the grassroots.

The roadmap is ready. Niger State is open for business. With global recognition secured, funding, partnerships, and technical support are now available, but first movers win. Clean energy projects and solar skills training are the next frontier.

As grassroots leaders carry the weight. The Commissioner urged community heads, parents, and youth groups to mobilize and connect local talent to new solar opportunities. 

The Commissioner also welcomed the federal government’s recent removal of Value Added Tax on renewable energy equipment. “This VAT removal reduces upfront costs of solar systems for households and businesses. It means solar is now cheaper and more accessible for Nigerlites,” he said.

Linking this to President Tinubu’s blue economy push, Hon. Suleiman Umar noted that clean energy and ocean-based industries are two sides of the same future. “Mr. President is creating five million jobs from fisheries, shipping, maritime tourism and renewable energy. Here in Niger State, we are building the solar capacity to power those jobs. There will be new capacity building programs, technical training, installation, maintenance, and clean energy entrepreneurship across all 25 LGAs as investors come to Niger,” he explained.

“This is your moment. Take advantage of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the New Niger Agenda of Governor Umaru Bago. Learn solar. Build skills. Own the future. Niger State is leading, and Nigerlites must lead with it.”
