Lighting Niger, Powering Growth: Under Ministry of Power & Renewable Energy

Every town glowing. Every farm working after sunset. Every clinic saving lives with steady power. Every small business growing without fear of blackout. That is where we are headed.

Under the leadership of Hon. Suleiman Umar, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has spent the last few months laying the foundation for that future. The focus is clear: deliver reliable, clean and affordable electricity to every part of Niger State, and use it to drive agriculture, industry, health and education.

This work is moving forward through strong partnerships with leading international organizations. The Ministry is collaborating with the Islamic Development Bank to advance large-scale solar power that will strengthen supply across the state capital and its environs, while creating jobs and supporting industries. At the same time, work with the World Bank is focused on expanding access and building sustainable energy systems that can serve homes, schools and businesses for the long term.  

To reach communities far from the national grid, the Ministry is also working with the Rural Electrification Agency and ECOWAS to deploy clean energy solutions to primary health centers and rural areas. The goal is simple: better healthcare, stronger local economies, and power where it is needed most.

Across Niger, mini-grids and decentralized power solutions are being rolled out to bring electricity closer to the people. This approach reduces pressure on the national grid and ensures that more families and businesses can get connected faster.

To protect these gains, the Ministry is strengthening quality and standards. Together with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria, NERC, NEMSA and Nigeria Customs, steps are being taken to remove fake and substandard products from the market. Nigerlites deserve power systems that are safe, durable and reliable.

Niger State holds a unique advantage. With all four of Nigeria’s hydro power dams located here, and with vast land and abundant sunlight, the state is truly the Home of Power. That advantage is now being turned into opportunity through the New Niger Agenda of Governor Umaru Bago, where electricity is positioned as the engine for farming, manufacturing, education and healthcare.

The path is set. Through clear policy, strong partnerships and practical projects, the Ministry is moving from planning to delivery. The target is not just more power, but power that transforms daily life; light in homes, energy on farms, stability in clinics, and growth in businesses.

The future of Niger will be powered here, by us and for us.
