Niger State Commends REA, UN Partnership On Mini-Grids As A Boost To Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Drive

The Honourable Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Niger State, Hon. Suleiman Umar, has congratulated the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) for its landmark collaboration with the United Nations on the Africa Minigrids Programme, Nigeria pilot project.

Hon. Umar described the partnership as "another important welcome development to Nigeria and across Africa", noting that it aligns directly with the energy access and industrialization goals of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda.

He specifically commended the leadership of the REA Managing Director, Dr. Abba Aliyu and the entire REA team, saying their commitment and strategic direction have positioned Nigeria as a global market for sustainable development and growth in renewable energy solutions.

According to the Commissioner, the UN-Nigeria collaboration on mini-grid solutions launched in Abuja is a critical step toward bridging Nigeria’s electricity access gap, driving industrialization, creating jobs, and expanding opportunities for women and young people.

“Mini-grids are not just energy solutions, they are development solutions. They power schools, health centres, farms and businesses, and unlock livelihoods in our rural communities,” Hon. Umar stated.  

He added that under Dr. Abba Aliyu’s leadership, REA has demonstrated the capacity to mobilize partnerships with the UN, development partners, the private sector, and local communities to deliver sustainable energy at scale.

Hon. Umar further noted that Nigeria is uniquely positioned to lead Africa’s energy transition due to its abundant renewable resources and vibrant private sector. He reaffirmed that Niger State remains committed to supporting federal initiatives that place rural electrification at the centre of economic transformation.

“Access to reliable electricity powers education, healthcare, agriculture, commerce, and innovation. This REA and UN collaboration is proof that when we follow the Renewed Hope Agenda and work together, we can accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals and deliver prosperity to our people,” he said.

The Commissioner urged all stakeholders to sustain the momentum and scale up investments so that more communities across Niger State and Nigeria can benefit from clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
