Niger State to Become Hub of Power and Renewable Energy - Hon. Suleiman Umar

As Nigeria pushes to overhaul its power sector, Honourable Suleiman Umar has called on electricity consumers across the country not to lose hope, assuring that the Federal Government is working to deliver sustainable and steady power supply for development and growth nationwide.

Speaking in support of the Federal Government’s new roadmap for the power sector, Hon. Umar said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s New Niger Agenda for Niger State, is already setting the foundation for long-term stability.

“The government is doing its best for all citizens of Nigeria,” Hon. Umar stated. “I want to assure Nigerlites that steady electricity supply will be sustainable. This is key to the development and growth we all desire across Niger State and beyond.”

His assurance comes as the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced that Nigeria is targeting 40% of its total power requirement to come from renewable energy by the year 2060. Tegbe, who briefed journalists in Lagos, said the plan marks “the dawn of a new era to reset the power sector for good.”

Hon. Umar highlighted key reforms already in motion:

1. Metering Drive: The Minister commended President Tinubu for initiating nationwide metering to replace the costly estimated billing system that eroded consumer confidence.

2. Youth Employment: A recent recruitment drive training 5,000 young Nigerians on metering is expected to reduce unemployment, with trainees to be absorbed by electricity Distribution Companies, Discos.

3. Power Act 2023: The new Act, according to Tegbe, has changed the landscape by allowing state governors and private investors to embrace innovation, competition and investment in the sector.

4. Technical Audit: A comprehensive technical audit of the transmission segment has been initiated to help sustain power supply nationwide.

Hon. Umar said Niger State is strategically positioned to be at the forefront of this transformation through the New Niger Agenda.

“Niger State will become the hub of Power and Renewable Energy,” he said. “Under Farmer Governor Umaru Bago’s vision, we have so many natural advantages here. This will create vast opportunities for all Investors, entrepreneurs, manufacturers and communities, especially our younger generations.”

He noted that with its land mass, water resources, and solar potential, Niger State stands to be a valuable asset not just for Nigerlites, but for the entire country and beyond.

“The investments coming into renewable energy will create jobs, power industries, and improve livelihoods. This is the future, and Niger State is ready to lead,” Hon. Umar added.

While acknowledging current challenges, Hon. Umar urged consumers to remain patient and supportive of government efforts.

“To all Nigerian consumers: please do not give up. The foundation being laid today is for a power sector that will serve generations to come. With cooperation from the media, private sector, and citizens working together as one country, we will get there,” he said.

With the FG’s 2060 renewable target and states like Niger taking the lead, Hon. Umar believes Nigeria is finally on the right trajectory to power its industries, homes, and dreams.
