From National Grid To Nature: Niger's New Path To Sustainable Power

The confidence of the Honourable Commissioner, Suleiman Umar on power and renewable energy projects in Niger State is not by chance. It is because the world is moving fast towards Green Economy, and Nigeria is moving with it.

The Federal Government has created the right environment for states to grow sustainable energy without depending only on the National Grid. From the Energy Transition Plan to the DARES programme, and now to new investments, the FG is making renewable energy possible for ordinary Nigerians.

Recently, a fresh $5 million investment came into the sector through PowerGen, supported by All On and partners like WindGen Power USA, ElectriFI, Impact Fund Denmark, SEFA and InfraCo. The investment will create 6,000 new connections, reach 41,000 beneficiaries, generate up to 9MW and to create 470 jobs nationwide, Nigeria’s first interconnected hybrid solar mini-grid, show that this model works. The Federal Government has also set up RAMCO to mobilize N3 trillion into renewable energy. And Niger State is already leading in terms of renewable energy projects. 

According to the FG’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan, Nigeria can save $686.8 billion in fuel cost by 2060 if we get it right, with a target of 277GW installed capacity and over 104,000 mini-grids by 2030. This is the future the world is diversifying into.

This is where Niger State comes in.

Under the New Niger Agenda of Farmer Governor Umaru Bago, Niger State is turning its natural resources — abundant sun and land — into real development. The state is not waiting for the grid. It is using nature for the betterment of the people. That is why projects are already moving across all 25 LGAs — solar for hospitals, schools, PHCs, markets, street lights, and large-scale solar procurement.

For Hon. Suleiman Umar and his team at the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy of Niger State, the logic is simple: when FG has opened the door, private money is flowing in, the world is going green, and Niger State has all it takes, then Power State must lead. 

It is green economy, it is sustainable growth, and it is New Niger.
