Powering The Economy Through Innovation: Farmer Governor Bago’s Big Push For Renewable Energy In Niger State - Hon. Suleiman Umar

The future of development in Niger State will be powered by clean and sustainable energy. Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has therefore made renewable energy a cornerstone of the New Niger Agenda, with clear investments aimed at lowering the cost of power, creating jobs, and ensuring energy security.

That is why the Farmer Governor has made it a priority for Niger State to become the capital of renewable energy projects in Nigeria.

We are innovating in generation. Our target is 1 gigawatt of solar power by 2030. To get there, we have secured funding for 200 megawatts and we are in advanced procurement with ALDESA Group of CCECC. We are also delivering the IsDB-funded 100 megawatt off-grid solar plant in Makunkele, Bosso Local Government Area. This will be the first 100MW subnational off-grid plant in Nigeria. A 12-member Project Steering Committee is in place to drive delivery. With these, Niger State already has 300 megawatts in active motion.

We are innovating in distribution. We have identified 50 public institutions across the state for rooftop solar installations. Hospitals, schools and government offices will now have clean, uninterrupted power. We are also rolling out LGA-based renewable energy projects in all 25 Local Government Areas. This includes solar street lighting, mini-grids for rural markets, and power for primary health centers. This is energy taken directly to the people.

The advantages are clear. Renewable energy gives us energy security because we are not waiting on the national grid alone. It gives us cost efficiency for government and for businesses. It protects our environment and aligns with global climate goals. It powers agriculture through irrigation under the Green Economy Initiative. It reduces post-harvest losses through cold rooms. It powers SMEs, classrooms and clinics.

The Farmer Governor is keying into this because he understands that without power, there is no industrialization. Without power, agriculture cannot scale. Without power, our young people cannot innovate. Renewable energy is the fastest, cleanest, and most sustainable path for Niger State, and we have the land, the sun, and the political will to lead.

We are achieving this through strong partnerships with IsDB, REA, ECOWAS, World Bank ROGEAP, private developers, and other technical partners. And we are backing it with technical capacity. I acknowledge the whole team of the Ministry for Power and Renewable Energy whose work ensures these projects are credible, bankable and sustainable.

The New Niger Agenda is built on action. Our commitment is that Niger State will not just participate in the renewable energy revolution. We will lead it.

Niger State will be the capital of renewable energy in Nigeria. Not by declaration, but by projects delivered.
