$300m DRE fund will transform Nigeria’s power sector, Niger State offers land, enabling environment - Hon. Suleiman Umar

The honourable commissioner for power and renewable energy, Niger State, Hon. Suleiman Umar, has hailed the commercial launch of the $300 million Nigeria distributed renewable energy (DRE) fund by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Africa50 and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

The fund, which was launched at the inaugural Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS) global action forum on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York, is designed to deploy capital into distributed renewable energy solutions, including mini-grids and standalone solar systems for underserved communities and businesses across Nigeria.

Hon. Suleiman Umar described the initiative as a bold and timely intervention that will accelerate sustainable development and inclusive growth for every Nigerian.

"This $300 million DRE fund is great news for the sustainable development of Nigeria. It is a clear demonstration of moving from commitments to implementation, aligning public, development and private capital to solve our most critical need - power access," the commissioner said.

He noted that the fund, to be co-managed by NSIA and Africa50 with SEforALL providing energy-access leadership, aligns perfectly with the vision of His Excellency, Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, under the New Niger Agenda to light up Niger State and make it the power State of Nigeria.

The commissioner further called on NSIA to ensure equitable distribution and implementation of the fund across all states of the federation.

"I encourage NSIA and its partners to ensure that the implementation and process go across all states in Nigeria. Especially Niger State - the power State. We have the land mass, the good environment, and the political will for such investments across all our 25 local government areas," he stated.

"We are ready to partner, we are ready to provide the enabling environment, and we are ready to host investors for mini-grids and solar solutions that will power our rural communities, our farms, and our industries."

Hon. Suleiman Umar reaffirmed the commitment of the Niger State ministry of power and renewable energy to support all federal government and private sector initiatives aimed at achieving universal energy access in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
